Valve releases Steam client beta optimisations and fixes

The 16 October update adds a second startup performance pass and fixes service-dialog and Vulkan issues.

Valve announced a Steam Preview/Beta client update on 16 October 2026. It adds a second wave of startup performance improvements after the earlier pass reached the public client.

Fixes address an erroneous Steam service error dialog on rapid shutdown or restart and date display for friends in British Columbia. They also cover native Steam Frame content incorrectly marked installable on Windows, voice-chat volume-slider layout, output-volume persistence between sessions, some non-Steam games failing to start, Vulkan games hanging after alt-tab, and NCAA Football 27 configuration not applying at startup.

A producer’s perspective

A focus on startup optimisation might come at the expense of other areas, risking regressions in less-tested features such as Vulkan compatibility. Assessing that trade-off needs an internal report of crash rates and beta-user feedback after release.
