Rumour: Sony patents machine-learning frame extrapolation

An autoencoder would use previous frames, motion vectors and input to generate the next frame before rendering.

This is a rumour attributed to the stated source. Its contents have not been verified as an official announcement.

On 16 October 2026, a GamingLeaksAndRumours user reported Sony had filed a patent called “Machine Learning Frame Extrapolation technique (Frame Generation with minimal additional lag)”, describing low-latency frame generation.

According to the reported patent description, an autoencoder processes previous frames, motion vectors and user input to produce the next frame before it is rendered. Unlike conventional frame generation, which needs an already calculated frame and adds latency, extrapolation is described as more complex and not currently available even on PC.

A producer’s perspective

If integrated, the technology would require balancing latency reduction against visual artefacts and more complex testing, potentially lengthening pre-launch optimisation. Assessing this requires intended hardware requirements and Sony’s target latency metrics.
